\u00a0U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his tough rhetoric against North Korea when he arrived in Japan on Sunday, saying the United States and its allies are prepared to defend freedom and \u201cno dictator\u201d should underestimate U.S. resolve.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump kicked off a 12-day Asian trip and is looking to present a united front with Japan against North Korea through meetings with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe amid heightened tensions over Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear and missile tests.<\/p>\n

He told reporters on Air Force One en route to Asia that North Korea would figure prominently in discussions, and also singled out trade, which he said had been \u201cbadly handled\u201d in the region for years.<\/p>\n

Trump has rattled some allies with his vow to \u201ctotally destroy\u201d North Korea if it threatens the United States and with his dismissal of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a \u201crocket man\u201d on a suicide mission.<\/p>\n

A top aide said last week Trump intends to tell Asian leaders the world is \u201crunning out of time\u201d in dealing with the nuclear crisis on the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo dictator, no regime, no nation should ever underestimate American resolve,\u201d Trump told hundreds of cheering U.S. and Japanese troops in camouflage uniforms gathered at Yokota Air Base, just west of Tokyo, soon after he arrived.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery once in a while, in the past, they underestimated us. It was not pleasant for them, was it?\u201d said Trump, who wore a bomber jacket as he addressed the troops.<\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s recent actions, including several missiles that flew over Japan and Pyongyang\u2019s sixth and largest nuclear test, have raised the stakes in the most critical international challenge of Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

Recent drills over South Korea by two U.S. strategic bombers have further heightened tensions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will never yield, never waver and never falter in defence of our freedom,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He told reporters earlier on Air Force One that a decision would be made soon on whether to add reclusive North Korea to a list of state sponsors of terrorism.<\/p>\n

Trump said his administration planned to take a different approach after years of what he termed \u201ctotal weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big problem for our country and the world, and we want to get it solved.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an apparent attempt to distinguish between North Korea\u2019s leadership and ordinary people, he said he thought North Koreans were \u201cgreat people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I hope it all works out for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

GOLF DIPLOMACY<\/h3>\n

Abe told reporters before Trump\u2019s arrival that he welcomed the visit as a chance to deepen bilateral ties by building on the \u201cfriendship and trust\u201d between the two leaders, fostered by several meetings that included a round of golf in Florida earlier this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI hope we will be able to have thorough discussions about international issues, including North Korea,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Trump and Abe greeted each other with a handshake at a golf course to be used during the 2020 Olympic Games, changing clothes and heading out to play after what media said was a lunch of hamburgers. In an allusion to a Trump campaign slogan, they signed caps that said \u201cDonald and Shinzo Make Alliance Even Greater.\u201d<\/p>\n

They discussed North Korea and trade while playing nine holes with Hideki Matsuyama, the world no. 3 pro golfer.<\/p>\n

A senior White House official said the two leaders have developed a close bond since Trump took office in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying golf with Prime Minister Abe and Hideki Matsuyama, two wonderful people!\u201d Trump tweeted. For his part, Abe took to Twitter to say he played golf \u201cwith a marvellous friend (President Donald J. Trump) full of spirited conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two leaders and their wives later dined on grilled Japanese premium beef at an upscale restaurant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In brief pre-dinner remarks, Trump said U.S.-Japan ties were closer than ever. But he added: \u201cWe\u2019ll have dinner tonight. I think we\u2019ll insult everybody by continuing to talk about trade.\u201d<\/strong><\/div>\n

Trump also said he planned to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during his trip, the longest Asian tour by any U.S. leader since George H.W. Bush in 1992.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s expected that we will meet,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want Putin\u2019s help on North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump wants a united front with the leaders of Japan and South Korea against North Korea before he visits Beijing to make the case to Chinese President Xi Jinping that he should do more to rein in Pyongyang.<\/p>\n

Separately, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson discussed that \u201cnow is the time to apply firm pressure on North Korea,\u201d Kono told reporters.<\/p>\n

A senior U.S. State Department official travelling with Tillerson said the pressure was having an effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have a better chance now than we\u2019ve had in the last couple of decades to solve this problem because the most important thing is to have the international community completely united in order to really choke off the lifeline for North Korea. It\u2019s got to be the way,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n

TRADE TALKS<\/h3>\n

Trade will factor heavily during Trump\u2019s trip as he tries to persuade Asian allies to agree to policies more favourable to the United States, a point Trump emphasised.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A centrepiece of the trip will be a visit to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Danang, Vietnam, where Trump will deliver a speech in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region, which is seen as offering a bulwark in response to expansionist Chinese policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things we\u2019re going to be very focussed on is trade because trade has not been done well for 25 years by the United States with this part of the world, with any part of the world,\u201d he said on Air Force One.<\/p>\n
