{"id":102436,"date":"2017-09-03T22:33:33","date_gmt":"2017-09-03T20:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=102436"},"modified":"2017-09-03T22:33:33","modified_gmt":"2017-09-03T20:33:33","slug":"cambodian-paper-shuts-with-dictatorship-parting-shot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arabtelegraph.com\/?p=102436","title":{"rendered":"Cambodian paper shuts with &#8216;dictatorship&#8217; parting shot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"40\"><strong>One of Cambodia\u2019s most stridently independent newspapers, The Cambodia Daily, published its last edition on Monday with the headline \u201cDescent Into Outright Dictatorship\u201d as it closed amid a crackdown on critics of Prime Minister Hun Sen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"41\">The English-language paper had been given a deadline of one month to pay $6.3 million for years of back taxes, which the publication disputed and described as \u201castronomical\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"42\">Its final front page led with the arrest on Sunday of Cambodia\u2019s main opposition leader, Kem Sokha, who was accused of treason in a significant escalation of the campaign against Hun Sen\u2019s opponents. The paper also reported on its own closure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"43\">\u201cWe have been a burr in Hun Sen\u2019s side for the entire time that we have been operating,\u201d said The Cambodia Daily\u2019s American editor-in-chief, Jodie DeJonge.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"44\">\u201cThis paper takes special pride in writing about some of the toughest issues,\u201d she told Reuters as journalists polished their final articles and office workers packed everything they could into cardboard boxes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"45\">The paper printed only a few thousand copies a day but had a reputation for breaking news about sensitive topics such as corruption, waste, environmental issues and land rights.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"46\">\u00a0Hun Sen defended the deadline given to the paper, saying it had to pay tax the same as any other business.<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"48\">\u201cWhen they didn\u2019t pay and we asked them to leave the country, they said we are a dictatorship,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"49\">The pro-government Fresh News website quoted tax authorities as saying that the tax bill stands even if the paper shuts down and that whoever is responsible at the publication would be barred from leaving Cambodia until the money is paid.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"56\">ELECTION WORRIES<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"57\">Independent media, opposition politicians and rights activists have been among casualties of a widening crackdown in the run-up to an election next year in which Hun Sen could face his toughest challenge of more than three decades in power.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"58\">During his rule Cambodia has been transformed from a failed state after the genocide of the Khmer Rouge, in which he was once a soldier. But disaffection has grown and the opposition increased its share of the vote in June local elections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Slideshow_inline-container_3FQ3h\" dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"59\">Until recently, Cambodia has had relatively free media compared with neighbors such as communist Vietnam and army-ruled Thailand.<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"71\">\u201cWhen The Cambodia Daily is shut down, it means press freedom in Cambodia is finished,\u201d said Chhorn Chansy, a 35-year-old Cambodian who is news editor on the paper. It employed more than 30 journalists, about half of whom were foreigners.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"72\">Eighteen radio stations were also ordered off the air last month and local radio stations have been stopped from leasing time to the United States-funded Radio Free Asia and Voice of America.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"74\">Hun Sen, 65, has increased his rhetoric against the United States, expelling a U.S. pro-democracy group and on Sunday accusing Washington of conspiring with Kem Sokha.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"75\">The Cambodia Daily was founded by American journalist Bernard Krisher in 1993 and Hun Sen this year berated some of its journalists as \u201cservants of foreigners\u201d. The paper said that the paper\u2019s assets would revert to Krisher, who is now 86 and living in Japan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" data-reactid=\"76\">DeJonge said that The Cambodia Daily had \u201cnever taken a penny\u201d from foreign governments or NGOs and just about broke even thanks to advertising, subscriptions and money from Krisher.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt was already in a perilous financial position,\u201d she said. \u201cThe government threats against the paper basically strangled the Daily.
